Well, nobody ever accused me of being the sharpest tool in the shed, but put me with two other numskulls, and we’re almost capable of pulling off a plan. I’m currently jotting this down from an internet café on Samui Island, in Southern Thailand. Since I haven’t been keeping everyone in the loop about my whereabouts in Thailand, let me break it down for you in a simple, easy-to-read list:
Jan 20 – 21
Flew into Bangkok and met up with Tom, Dave, Shane, Anthony, and some other former DAGOC people at the D&D Inn. Spent the night drinking buckets on the street and dancing till dawn, only to stumble back to the Inn around 4 AM. Since sleeping seemed pointless at that point, I stayed up and watched the beginning of a terrible movie until it was time to book train tickets to Chiang Mai for the night train. (I know, I said I’d never take the night train again, but this time, I lucked out with a bottom bunk, and the ride was surprisingly peaceful.)
Jan 22 – 25
Arrived in Chiang Mai and got roped in by some eccentric old lady in fake fur who claimed to have the best guest house in town (don’t they all?). Anyway, Tom, Dave, and I hopped into the crazy lady’s bus and ended up at her guest house, which was decent enough and conveniently close to the old city and night market.
We went white water rafting on the same river as last time with Bonnie and JB. Guess what? Dave fell out of the boat at almost the exact same spot as Bonnie, and this time, he’s convinced I gave him a nudge. Well, he shouldn’t have hit me in the head with the oar.
On the 24th, someone below me started a racket in the wee hours, so I went for a stroll. When I got back, Dave and I decided to check out a tour to Sukhothai. On the way back from breakfast, we spotted a new travel agent and went in. Without any pressure to buy, the manager pitched us a wild idea—drive to Samui, stopping at Sukhothai on the way. We sold the idea to Tom, and “Road Trip Thailand” was born. We booked the car and planned to leave early on the 25th.
No one was up early on the 25th, especially not me after a night of drinking Thai whiskey with Mike. We hit the road around 11 AM, with me trying not to hurl in the front seat, and Dave sleeping and navigating in the back.
We arrived at Sukhothai historical park around 2 PM, and I went trigger-happy with my camera, snapping about 160 pictures of the park. It’s like an old ruined city with tons of temples. I’ll upload the photos when I can find a Wi-Fi connection.
Around 6 PM, we grabbed dinner and then hit the road south to Samui. The drive from Chiang Mai to Samui is about 1200km, and being the crazy adventurers we are, we drove straight through the day and night, arriving here around 2 PM today.
Now, it’s time for me to hit up the best spa ever and then prepare for the full moon party on the 28th. I’m sure I’ll have plenty more to share after that!
